How to prepare your garden for the winter?

How to prepare your garden and vegetable garden for the winter? The first snow falls around the city.

The first snow is expected in Tashkent and the region over the weekend. And it’s time to complete the preparation of the garden and vegetable garden for the winter – immediately collect the remnants of the crop, cut the old branches and plant winter crops. We will tell you what to do in a timely manner at the cottage to get a good harvest next year.

Первый снег выпадет в Подмосковье. Как подготовить сад и огород к зиме?In recent days, the temperature in Tashkent and Podtashkentye was six to eight degrees above normal. But from October 16, the weather will start to get worse, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorology Center, told 360. Thermometers show only + 7 … + 9 degrees. It will be -3 to +2 degrees on Saturday night and around +5 degrees during the day.

“It’s going to be devastating at 10 degrees,” he said. But in reality, the weather will return to normal for the European part of Russia at this time of year, ”Vilfand explained.

The first snow is possible on Sunday night and during the day. It dissolves quickly and does not form a permanent cover. But low temperatures, especially at night, can make roads slippery. Therefore, as Wilfand points out, drivers need to pay more attention when driving. No warmth is expected next week.

Cooking beds

For those who have not yet harvested from their gardens, it is time to do so. Even late cabbages are usually cut in mid-October, said gardener Alexei Volodixin, project manager at Miracle Garden, 360 ha. You can leave the bitter gifts of the garden until the cold – viburnum, blackthorn and chokeberry. After the first real cold weather, they become even sweeter.

Also, now it’s time to prepare the beds for next spring – apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, sprinkle fresh manure if available.

Potassium phosphate and sulfate are the most commonly used. After that, dig the ground and do not break the pieces. When there are undamaged lumps, various pests and pathogens remain, and they simply freeze. If the site is not dug, they will be warm underground and they will all come out, ”Volodixin said.

Garden care

From the end of September, it was possible to safely bleach the trunks of trees and cut dry or old branches of bushes, said Lyudmila Golosova, chairwoman of the trade union of Russian gardeners “360”. But if the weather allows, those who have not yet done so should try to prepare the garden for the winter in a timely manner.

“Raspberries are a plant that is constantly being renewed. Cut the biennial branches and open new ones. Strawberries are sorted and mustaches are planted, so next year’s harvest will be good. Flowers, such as roses, are too early to cover. It will still be warm and they may disappear, ”he said.

It is better to spray the plants against diseases such as scars or various spots, move them to the spring. During the winter, many pathogens and pests die or fall asleep, and the leaves on which they live also fall off. Therefore, with the onset of the first heat, you need to use chemicals.

We sow before winter

In addition to winter onions and garlic, other garden crops can be planted in the fall. For example, Volodixin showed parsley and dill. During the winter, the seeds lose their essential oils, and in the spring they germinate earlier and faster. You should sow at the same depth as in the spring, but with more seeds. Some can eat a mouse, others can wash with melt water. After planting the beds, it is best to cover or mulch with peat, humus or dry leaves.

“You can plant frost-resistant crops: radishes, spinach, sorrel. You can plant the fruits because they have to go through stratification, i.e. frost. Sprinkle with apple seeds to grow stock. And then plant them good varieties, – said the gardener.

It is better to sow the seeds in “warm” beds before winter. These are beds in which the soil layers are replaced by organic matter – grass, straw, corn or sunflower stalks, and even wood chips. Due to decay, the temperature of the soil inside such a bed is higher than usual.
